Facebook's news feed changes are latest blow to publishers, brands

FacebookMark Zuckerberg and a pregnant Priscilla Chan

Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg made this known in a post on his verified personal page on the social network on Friday. That means posts like a friend asking for advice, recommendations for a trip or an article that prompts interaction, according to a post by Facebook's head of news feed, Adam Mosseri. Those include personal posts from friends or family, and especially those looking for a suggestion or sparking a conversation. About the new change, he writes, "You'll see less public content like posts from businesses, brands, and the media".

He noted that because staying connected is the social network platform's primary objective, it will restrict public content propping up on users' news feed. They make this argument despite the fact that Facebook has editorial control over content posted on the platform and - with the changes now being implemented - the fact that Facebook is deciding what factors make news sources worthy of being placed in its News Feed. "But I also expect the time you do spend on Facebook will be more valuable", said Zuckerberg.

As Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg describes it in a public letter, "As we roll this out, you'll see less public content like posts from businesses, brands, and media".

We feel a responsibility to make sure our services aren't just fun to use, but also good for people's well-being.

Facebook is changing what its users will see to highlight posts they are most likely to engage with and make time spent on social media more "meaningful".

"We believe these changes will be beneficial to Facebook in the medium and long term".

David Chavern, president and CEO of News Media Alliance, said, "People are going to be consuming less news through Facebook than before". His vow followed a year that saw Facebook come under sharp criticism for contributing to a climate of extreme political polarisation, the distribution of fake news and escalating privacy concerns. Mr Akhil Karthik, who runs a social media campaign, said, "Facebook is making it hard for social media marketing".

Under the revised regime, there will be fewer posts from brands, pages and media companies and more from people. On the other hand, passively reading articles or watching videos-even if they're entertaining or informative-may not be as good. Also, our content is more visible the more people share and comment on it, so if it's a story you care about it, please share it. He added that the news feed update relating the ranking of posts is expected to assist the goal. While publishers' and businesses' organic reach will decline with the algorithm update, that means the content users do see from businesses (organic or paid) could have a much bigger impact.

"No matter how well we do on Facebook and how great our videos are, making high-quality videos itself does not bring us any profit", said Cho. The measure is a part of a wider program aimed at prioritizing "meaningful social interactions" against "relevant content".

"We started making changes in this direction past year, but it will take months for this new focus to make its way through all our products", Zuckerberg wrote in his Facebook post.

The Portal device is rumored to be released in the second half and will start off at $499 per unit, which is significantly higher than its rivals Echo, Google Home, and Apple HomePod, but could still be lowered in order to have a better chance in the market.
